Triglav Lakes Valley: Slovenia’s Alpine Lake Wonderland

The Triglav Lakes Valley (Dolina Triglavskih jezer) in northwestern Slovenia is one of Europe's most enchanting alpine valleys, featuring seven iconic turquoise lakes amid jagged Julian Alps peaks. Nestled deep in Triglav National Park between Bohinj and Trenta valleys, it draws hikers and nature lovers to its karst landscapes and crystal-clear waters.

Location

The valley spans 6-8 km at 1,300-2,000 m elevation in the Julian Alps’ heart, southwest of Mount Triglav (2,864 m). Its “Sea of Stone” karst terrain hosts ten lakes total, draining to both the Adriatic (Soča) and Black Sea (Sava Bohinjka).

Origin of the Name

Named for nearby Mount Triglav—Slovenia’s national symbol—the valley features seven main glacial lakes formed on impermeable karst sediments: Black Lake, Double Lake, Ledvica Lake, Green Lake, Brown Lake, Lake under Vršac, and Mlaka v Laštah.

Best Hiking Season

June to mid-September offers snow-free trails, open huts, and wildflowers, with July-August peak for weather but crowds. Late May/early October risks snow; avoid wet rocks post-rain.

Why Visit the Triglav Lakes Valley

The Triglav Lakes Valley blends accessible alpine beauty with rugged exploration: easy lake loops for beginners, hut-to-hut traverses for intermediates, and peak scrambles for experts, all in Slovenia’s pristine national park. With no cars beyond trailheads, well-signed paths, and seasonal shuttles, it’s perfect for day trips from Bohinj or multi-day Julian Alps adventures.
